Week 4 Matchday 3: Crew SC vs New York Red Bull

What low matches the high of a victorious 2-0 total domination of the Terrible Football Club on Crewsmas?

If you answered, “a bye week the next weekend,” you get a Black and Gold star.  If you’re anything like me, you spent Saturday March 21st curled up in a ball babbling We Love You, We Love You over and over again.  Of course, I was able to catch up on my Netflix binge habit, so there’s that.

The fun starts anew Saturday March 28th at 7:30pm against FC Why’d You Fire Petke.  You can get all the news leading up to the game including perspectives by NYRB writers by going to Latest News. As always, Crew Union has you covered for Nordecke tickets.  You can go to Match Tickets to purchase online or email tickets@crewunion.com to reserve tickets.  We only have a limited amount of tickets remaining for this game and we expect the Nordecke to sell out, so if you want tickets, the earlier the better.

Crew Union will of course be out tailgating in the Megatailgate area before the match starting about 3pm. We want to send a big thank you to the Ole Farts for another successful Chili Cook-Off on Crewsmas.  The Ole Farts will return for a catered tailgate in April for the Orlando match, as well as beer kegs from North High Brewing.

If you haven’t read, Membership Not Required, OR: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the MEGATAILGATE, from Massive Report contributor Kristopher Landis, I suggest that you make it required reading.  I think it embodies just about everything Crew Union and all of the SGs of the Nordecke want to convey about the tailgate and really Columbus supporter culture in general.  Crew Union loves our members, but it’s all supporters that make the pregame, game, and post game so special.  That said, if you do like what we do and want to support it, you can get membership in our webstore or at the Crew Union tent on match day.

Crew Union will also be continuing to take donations at the tailgate for Heroes in the Nordecke philanthropic effort.  Through Crewsmas Eve and Crewsmas we’ve raised $1080 toward season tickets for military and veteran groups.

As an added bonus this week, there’s US National Team action as the men take on Denmark Wednesday March 25th at 3pm on ESPN.  Join AO Columbus and Crew Union at 4th Street Bar and Grill for a watch party.

Glory to Columbus!!!

If you have any questions or comments, please note we can only answer in corporate speak and won’t just answer the bleeping question in an effort to accommodate our NJ guests, but please contact us anyway.

We Heard You and We’re Making Changes to the Website

I want to thank all the members who have taken the time to leave feedback about the website over the last several months.  We’ve taken note of several of your suggestions and are moving to make several changes.

Hopefully you’ve already noticed some of the changes.  We’ve updated all the sections in the Participate heading, including the Songs and Chants heading.  Coming soon we’ll update the Columbus Visiting Guide to include favorite restaurants and give you a chance to list some of your favorite places around town.  The Away Watch Party and Chapters page has been updated with new information on our Cincinnati chapter and Burning River Battalion’s bar for the Cleveland/Lakewood area.  We hope to soon announce a place to watch for our Dayton chapter when they are ready to announce.  We’re constantly looking for places around Ohio and surrounding areas you can go to watch games with other supporters of this Massive team.  If you live outside Columbus and want to get involved or start a chapter, please contact us.

The one suggestion we kept getting was to update the Latest News tab, which basically had nothing in it, with news sources about Crew SC from around the web.  We’ve completed this.  I’m proud to announce that when you click on Latest News you can find links to all the news worth reading on a daily basis from the Massive writers of Columbus Dispatch, ColumbusCrewSC.com, Massive Report, and from around the web.  On game weeks we’ll make active feeds from the opposing teams so that you can properly scout them and know who and what to look for from opposing teams.

The home page will continue to be used for Crew Union news and updates as well as, we hope, Crew Union original articles.  We are looking for volunteers to contribute to the website so if you fancy yourself a writer and want to contribute to crewunion.com please contact us and let us know.

For those unhappy with the layout, we are working on incorporating a new theme.  We think this change will really streamline the website for members and make it easier to use across several viewing platforms.

Please keep the ideas coming.  We want to make this site a place you want to visit and useful to you as members.

It’s Crewsmas Week!

Crew Supporters Union Scarf

Welcome to the most magical week of the year, Crewsmas Week! Here’s a few things you should know ahead of this weekend’s festivities.

Crew Union is proud to announce a new philanthropic initiative for active service members and veterans called Heroes in the Nordecke.

The idea began when DJ Irving, a member of the military and a Nordecke season ticket member, got stationed in Italy. Despite not being able to use them, he still purchased season tickets to support his team, but he requested that the tickets be donated to members of the military.

When Crew Union heard of this selfless act, we were inspired and wanted to join DJ in giving back to those who served our country. So, in addition to DJ’s season ticket, Crew Union has purchased two additional season tickets to contribute to DJ’s cause. However, we aren’t going to stop there. We knew that when our members heard DJ’s story, they too would be inspired and want to contribute.

At Crewsmas Eve and at the first few tailgates of the season, we will have donation jars for members to contribute what they can. Also at the Crewsmas Eve party, we will sell raffle tickets for some memorabilia we’ve accumulated over the years. All proceeds of the raffle and donation jars will go directly to purchase more season tickets for the Heroes in the Nordecke initiative.

If you would like to make a more substantial donation, such as the purchase of a full or half season ticket, please contact Ben Hoelzel at bhoelzel@crewunion.com

Crewsmas Eve

Crewsmas Eve

Join us Friday night before the first home match for our 8th annual Crewsmas Eve party at Fourth Street.

Crewsmas Eve began as an informal gathering of friends the night before the Crew’s first home game. Eight years later and in it’s fifth year at Fourth Street Bar, it’s an official event of Crew Union and even recognized by the club. Old friends reminisce and new friends are made in a joyous celebration of the new Crew season. We’re still working some final details, but this year’s event promises to be another “can’t miss” affair.

The Crewsmas Eve Party is open to all Columbus Crew fans and supporters.

Crew Union will have membership packages available for purchase.

A special thanks to our partners Fourth Street Bar & Grill for helping make our Crewsmas Eve Party possible.

Saturday, March 14
Tailgate: 4pm-6:45pm
Supporters March: 7pm
Kickoff: 7:30pm
Location: Mega-Tailgate Under Crew Union Tent
Facebook Event | Google Plus Event

With kickoff at 7:30pm we expect the tailgate to be going strong by 4pm, probably earlier. We’ll have match tickets available to pick up as well as 2015 memberships. If you want to get started even earlier Fourth Street will be opening in the morning for EPL. Food wise we are back for the annual Crewsmas Chili cook-off. We will be doing 3 or 4 kinds of Chili and if you have a favorite recipe you want to share bring it along, the more the merrier. As always any sides are welcome but not a requirement to come over and enjoy the food. So grab some friends, come on over to the tailgate, share a beverage or three with friends old and new and get ready to take on Toronto. (there will be a vegetarian choice with the chili).

As part of our membership package this year your Crew Union cup will get you free beer at select tailgates starting at Crewsmas!

All of the supporters groups will be marching into the stadium so that our presence is felt by the players during warm ups.  The tailgate will end around 6:45pm and the march will begin at 7pm.

All tickets and membership must be picked up by 6:30pm.  At 6:30pm tickets purchased through Paypal will be taken to Will Call and any tickets which were reserved, but not paid for will be released for general sale.

Changes…Changes Welcome to 2015 Crew Supporters Union

It’s been a busy off-season for Crew Union leadership filled with exciting changes for the supporters group and for members.

New Crew Union Logo

The most visible change this offseason has been the change to our logo.  While we will always love the old logo designed by member Aaron Brown and in use since inception in 2006, the leadership felt an update that recognized where we are and where we are heading as a supporters group was in store.  Designed by Kevin Glenn, we think it encapsulates everything we hope to convey.

Elements of the new logo

  • The design holds Crew Union’s traditional circle shape with the inner and outer rings displayed to pay homage to Crew SC’s new badge.  This serves to remind us that first and foremost as supporters we exist to support this Massive club.
  • The state of Ohio with a capital star for Columbus is displayed at the top in recognition of the many Crew Union members who travel across the state and nation to come to Columbus to support Crew SC.  We recognize that Crew SC is not just Columbus’, but Ohio’s team.  As an organization we strive to give a platform to all supporters across the state and nation who support this team.
  • Crew Supporters Union is predominantly displayed in the center to show the pride members have in this supporters group that continues to grow and evolve in our support of Crew SC.  It also serves to formalize our more recognized shortened name of Crew Union by the typeset of the words.
  • LCL 614 ties our organization to the great City of Columbus and our commitment to making it truly MASSIVE.  We are and always will be Columbus til I Die.

Besides the tremendous support of the members, one of the aspects that has made this supporters group so successful and able to serve it’s members has been the lack of turnover in leadership from year to year.  Consistently there have been great people who work behind the scenes to make sure that members are taken care of and their voices represented in meetings with the front office.  This off-season, however, has seen the departure of some of those key leaders who helped build this supporters group to what it is.

John Clem, who has been our president since 2008, stepped down this off-season.  He continues with Crew Union as a season ticket member to help with our social media outreach and to help lead us in chants in the stands as always.  His contributions will be missed in everything we do, but we wish him the best as he moves forward.

To replace John as president, our long time Treasurer, Kevin McCollough, has stepped forward.  Kevin has always been a guiding light in our supporters group and will continue to do so in this new capacity.  Robert Rovick will be moving from the accountant position to fill in as Treasurer.

Also joining us this year into the position of Committee Liaison Officer is Kevin Glenn. You probably know Kevin from the great work he does with #tifosweat and his contributions to AO Columbus.  His involvement brings a graphic designers mind to the leadership.  We see the knowledge and involvement he has in other groups who support this team as key to how we want to involve members as we move forward.

Getting Involved

Our supporters group started with about 30 supporters deciding to move from section 137 to 103 in 2006.  It has now grown to over 800 members in 2014.  We have over 100 full season ticket members and over 30 who have half season ticket membership.  Every year we have increased our season ticket commitment with Crew SC to the point that we now control all of section 101 for the first time.  This is all the result of the great members who have given their time, money, and support to Crew Union over the years.

The leadership of Crew Union have always known that in order to continue to move forward and grow as an organization, we need to better involve our members.  However, we have often fallen short in asking for that help.  This year we plan to ask if you want to volunteer and get you involved in areas that you are passionate about as supporters. Whether that passion is for Tifo, charity, in stadium atmosphere, or tailgates, we know your contributions will be such that it will propel this supporters group to heights we never thought possible just like it always has.

2015 Crew Union membership is available in the webstore.  We hope you’ll join us for another exciting season in support of Crew SC.
