Week 9: Matchday 8 On the Road Again

Columbus has a message for you MLS.  If the previous week’s 3-0 demolition of Orlando City didn’t convey it, then certainly the complete obliteration of Philadelphia 4-1 this week announced it loud and clear.  Crew SC is good and working toward greatness.  As this excellent article from MLSsoccer.com’s Matthew Doyle illustrates, the Black and Gold have the perfect players for the style they play with the ability to turn possession into production.

The Massive next turn their attention to DC United at RFK Stadium Saturday May 2, at 7pm.  It’s a classic six pointer for Crew SC as they look to continue to climb the standings in the early season.  The scum have started the 2015 season strong with a 4-1-2 record which finds them tied for 1st in the East.  DC is an experienced balanced team that knows how to get results. They don’t score much, don’t give up much, and fight for everything.  A perfect team to hate.  They feature forward Fabian Espindola, back from his 6 game suspension for being a gigantic douchebag, Kettering, OH native Chris Rolfe, and Akron alum and US international Perry Kitchen.  For a more in depth analysis from a well respected pundit of all things DC go here.

If you’re thinking of going to DC for the game, follow this link for tickets.  The code is “CREW.”  For those supporting from Columbus, I hope you’ll join Crew Union at 4th Street Bar and Grill for our away watch party.  Remember to bring your membership card for 20% off drinks and 25% off food.  If you’re in the Cincinnati or Cleveland area, check out their bars to watch with other Crew fans.  Please go here for details. If you live in other areas and go to a bar to watch away games with Crew fans, please contact us and let us know.  We’d love to add your group/bar to our list so fans know where to get together to watch games.

Also, the May home games against Seattle and Chicago have been added to our web store.

Glory to Columbus!!!!!

Week 8: Matchday 7

Now that was fun!!!!  Nothing like a 3-0 demolition of Orlando, in perfect weather, as the Black and Gold look to get some rhythm as their schedule starts to even out.  The league better look out as Pipa’s Happy with that back heel goal and splitting pass for Kie Kamara’s goal.  I’m sure Pipa has more magic in store for the next home game against Philadelphia Union Saturday April 25th at 7:30pm.

Philadelphia is picking up where they left off last year, right to the bottom of the table with 6pts on 8 games.  It’s hard to place this team’s style of play.  At times they move the ball around deftly and show a desire to keep possession.  They are tied with 2 other teams for 2nd in the league with 9 so far.  The good news is a new season hasn’t seemed to fix their propensity to give up late goals turning ties into loses and wins into ties.  Philly features Argentine Christian Maidana, Frenchman Sebastien Le Toux, and US international Maurice Edu.

Nordecke tickets are available in the webstore for this match or to reserve and pay at the tailgate, please email tickets@crewunion.com.  Tickets can be picked up under the Crew Union Tent in the mega-tailgate area.

We want to thank the Ole Farts for yet another successful catered tailgate 4/18.  Crew Union members, you went through 75lbs of wings and 10lbs of fries, just FYI.  The Ole Farts will return May 9th for their next catered tailgate.  I want to apologize to everyone for the confusion about the North High Brewing beer being available at the last tailgate.  I got my dates mixed up on that.  Bring your cups to this tailgate, THERE WILL BE FREE BEER.  For real this time.

The tailgate will start about 4pm and tickets must be picked up by 6:30 pm.  After 6:30, webstore purchased tickets will be taken to will call and reserved unpaid for tickets will be released for general sale.  At 7 pm the Nordecke March to the Match begins as all supporters march as one from the tailgate to the Nordecke.

After the game, join us at 4th Street Bar and Grill where hopefully we’ll be enjoying Toto, some victory juice, and a few post match libations.

Beyond the match this week, as the weather starts to improve, I hope you’ll join Crew Union for some pick up soccer held throughout the year.  Members and non-members alike are welcome to join in; no reservations needed.  The competition is light and all skill levels are welcomed.  Go here for dates and times.

Glory to Columbus!!!

Week 7: Matchday 6

The Massive earned two hard fought road points against Vancouver and New England in week 6.  While we were hoping for better results, two points when the team has to travel cross continent against two very good teams isn’t that bad.  Glorious days are coming however as the Crew have a two week home stand starting with Orlando City SC April, 18th at 7:30pm.

This will be the first of three regular season meetings between the Crew and expansion side Orlando City.  The two teams meet up in Orlando’s USL incarnation in the 2014 Disney Pro Soccer Classic, a 4-4 back and fourth affair, on the way to the Black and Gold’s preseason trophy in that tournament.

Orlando sits 3rd on 8pts in the East with a 2-2-2 record.  Like Crew SC they are a team that values possession and they are the top passing team in the young MLS season. They feature 2007 FIFA Player of the Year Kaka and US international Brek Shea who is famous for wearing a dead chicken on his head for a year; at least that’s what I think that was.

Nordecke tickets are available in the webstore for this match or to reserve and pay at the tailgate, please email tickets@crewunion.com.  Tickets can be picked up under the Crew Union Tent in the mega-tailgate area.  Tickets are now sold out for this match.

The Ole Farts return for another catered tailgate this game as they will be providing chicken wings and fries for all to enjoy.  If you want to bring a side dish to share with the group, you’re more then welcome to do so.  Also remember to bring your 2015 Crew Union Cup as North High Brewing beer will return for this match for all members to enjoy.

The tailgate will start about 3 pm and tickets must be picked up by 6:30 pm.

Glory to Columbus!!!

Week 6: Matchday 4 and 5

So, we’ve endured another early season bye week and what’s on the other side?  Two road games, 3 days apart, each on opposite sides of the continent, both on artificial turf.  Yeah MLS scheduling!!!!!  At least the weeks without Crew SC soccer are gone until June.

Crew Union will of course be hosting watch parties at 4th Street Bar and Grill for the two matches.  The fun starts Wednesday April 8th at 10pm against Vancouver Whitecaps.  Wednesday is $2 well drinks at 4th Street and you can use your membership card to get 20% off other drinks and 25% off food as always.

So far, Vancouver is the top team in the early MLS season with a 4-1 record, losing only their opening match against Toronto.  They are a fast, counter attacking team that boasts the March Player of the Month in young forward Octavio Rivero who has 4 goals on the season.

The Crew’s second game in the week is Saturday April 11th at 3pm against New England.  You can make a day out of it as 4th Street will be open early for the full slate of EPL games this week starting at 7:35am for the Everton v Swansea City match.  4th Street boasts some pretty good breakfast for early risers.

After starting the season with two straight loses, the Revolution are unbeaten in their last three.  NE is a deep, balanced team who is expected to fight for a top spot in the East and MLS all season.  With Jermaine Jones out due to injury, it’s unclear who MLS will have referee the match, but I hear Bobby Shuttleworth is still actually alive, so there’s that.

For those that live in Cincinnati or Cleveland, I hope you’ll consider joining other Crew SC supporters for the matches by visiting Rhinehaus Bar in Cincy and Merry Arts Pub in Lakewood.  Full details can be found here for both bars.

While the schedule isn’t ideal for the Massive, these are two top level games that should be exciting to watch.  You can catch all the news about Columbus and these two teams leading up to the games in our Latest News section.  We hope to see all of you this week at 4th Street.

Go Crew SC!!!!!

FYI, all April home Nordecke tickets are available for sale in the match tickets section of the webstore, beginning with the 4/18 game against Orlando City.

Week 4 Matchday 3: Crew SC vs New York Red Bull

What low matches the high of a victorious 2-0 total domination of the Terrible Football Club on Crewsmas?

If you answered, “a bye week the next weekend,” you get a Black and Gold star.  If you’re anything like me, you spent Saturday March 21st curled up in a ball babbling We Love You, We Love You over and over again.  Of course, I was able to catch up on my Netflix binge habit, so there’s that.

The fun starts anew Saturday March 28th at 7:30pm against FC Why’d You Fire Petke.  You can get all the news leading up to the game including perspectives by NYRB writers by going to Latest News. As always, Crew Union has you covered for Nordecke tickets.  You can go to Match Tickets to purchase online or email tickets@crewunion.com to reserve tickets.  We only have a limited amount of tickets remaining for this game and we expect the Nordecke to sell out, so if you want tickets, the earlier the better.

Crew Union will of course be out tailgating in the Megatailgate area before the match starting about 3pm. We want to send a big thank you to the Ole Farts for another successful Chili Cook-Off on Crewsmas.  The Ole Farts will return for a catered tailgate in April for the Orlando match, as well as beer kegs from North High Brewing.

If you haven’t read, Membership Not Required, OR: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the MEGATAILGATE, from Massive Report contributor Kristopher Landis, I suggest that you make it required reading.  I think it embodies just about everything Crew Union and all of the SGs of the Nordecke want to convey about the tailgate and really Columbus supporter culture in general.  Crew Union loves our members, but it’s all supporters that make the pregame, game, and post game so special.  That said, if you do like what we do and want to support it, you can get membership in our webstore or at the Crew Union tent on match day.

Crew Union will also be continuing to take donations at the tailgate for Heroes in the Nordecke philanthropic effort.  Through Crewsmas Eve and Crewsmas we’ve raised $1080 toward season tickets for military and veteran groups.

As an added bonus this week, there’s US National Team action as the men take on Denmark Wednesday March 25th at 3pm on ESPN.  Join AO Columbus and Crew Union at 4th Street Bar and Grill for a watch party.

Glory to Columbus!!!
